Shirley has volunteered for many years at USMS sanctioned and non-sanctioned open water swims in her area. She was someone race directors depended on with her experience and knowledge. She received long distance All-Star Honors for 19 years, and she had USMS long distance records for 34 individual and two relay events. Shirley was willing to mentor and develop friendships with other swimmers. She answered questions on procedures and strategies. She shared her open water enthusiasm with swimmers, and said to many of them, “don’t you just love Open Water swimming!”
